Brian Van Doormaal

Brian Van Doormaal has dedicated his professional career of nearly 37 years involved in the genetic improvement of dairy cattle in Canada. Most significantly, he was the General Manager of Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) for the 24 years of its existence before the creation of the Lactanet Canada partnership in June 2019. For his entire career, he has been a member of the Genetic Evaluation Board (GEB) and involved in the allocation of industry funds aimed at supporting research, mainly in the area of genetic evaluations of dairy cattle.
He has been directly involved in the implementation of essentially all current genetic evaluation systems and services in Canada including genomic evaluations in 2009, Mastitis Resistance in 2014, Metabolic Disease Resistance in 2016, the Hoof Health index in December 2018 and the first official Feed Efficiency evaluations in April 2021.
He led the research, development and implementation in August 2015 of Pro$ as Canada’s profit-based genetic selection index alongside the LPI. Internationally, Brian has been the Canadian representative to Interbull for nearly 25 years and was the 2016 recipient of the ICAR President’s Award. Brian is well-known for his numerous extension articles and public speaking engagements in both official languages.
